Martin Phillipson began his music studies at the age of 12 under the tutelage of Lew Campbell at the Sydney Conservatorium High School.
While completing his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees studying with Daniel Mendelow and Gordon Webb, he performed extensively with many of Australia's leading ensembles: Sydney Symphony Orchestra, (including the 1995 European tour with Edo deWaart), the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Martin was also a founding member of the Australian Brass Quintet, and a member of the Sydney Brass Ensemble.
In 1997 Martin moved to Germany to study with Max Sommerhalder at the Detmold Hochshule fur Musik. He was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma and was appointed assistant teacher to Max Sommerhalder.
During this time he was a member of the North-West German Philharmonic Orchestra, Herford. He also worked as a freelance artist with the German Bach Soloists, the German Symphony Orchestra, Berlin and South West Radio Orchestra, Baden Baden (including performances at the Salzburg Festival in 2000). As a soloist Martin performed the Aratjunian Concerto in Munster, and the Bach Brandenburg Concerto with the Herford Chamber Orchestra.
In 2000 Martin was invited to be the Principal Trumpet with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, touring Europe with the Orchestra's Chief Conductor Lan Shui. In 2001 he was Principal Trumpet of the Malaysian Philharmonic in Kuala Lumpur. Martin has held the position of Associate Principal Trumpet of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra since the beginning of 2002, and has performed with both the Queensland and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras as Guest Principal.
